Migrant and English Language Learner Programs

Students are identified using various criteria under federal guidelines and receive services available for grades K-12.

English Language Learners are students whose primary language is other than English or who are living in a household where English is not the primary language. Students are administered the English Language Proficiency Assessment (ELPA) upon enrollment and/or in early spring to determine the student's proficiency. Once students reach proficiency on the ELPA, they are identified as a former Limited English Proficient (FLEP) student.

Migrant Students are identified based on a relative's working and living status. The relative must be seeking work or working in agriculture and have a change of residence that occurred in the last three years. A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) must be completed and approved for the student to receive services.

Services during the school year are provided in several ways: pull-out with a certified teacher and/or parapro, integrated into the classroom setting with a certified teacher and/or parapro, or in an after-school setting. During the summer, migrant students are serviced with thirty instructional days, focusing on core curriculum and skills.
